Star Wars and Gaming fans unite in awe at this R2 with more gaming power than the original Star Wars special effects computers and C-3PO combined! PopSci reader and engineering student Brian De Vitis converted this R2-D2 cooler into the ultimate Arcade Droid with eight game consoles, even including a projector in it’s dome just like the real R2’s. It has the motherboards from the eight consoles stacked on shelves inside, a sound system, and he rearranged the inputs so he could plug in controllers from the outside.
Now he just needs a place to keep his beers cold…

E3 is here again! The excitement as usual is unbearable, what-oh-what will be revealed this year. We find it interesting that so little is known about any big announcements expected this year from anyone. Does this mean that there will be surprises of a major scale from all parties? A new Mario from Nintendo perhaps?
Let’s revisit a rumor that we have been following closely for quite some time now that just doesn’t go away…motion controlled gameplay on true next-gen consoles! The month of May has been blowing up with new information that leads us to believe (yet again) that it will finally be revealed this year. Follow along to see what the buzz is all about.

Remember the Sega Genesis? There were so many good games. Now you can relive 49 of them on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Playstation 3, for the retail price of $29.95. Seriously, for 30 bucks you really can’t go wrong. Armando Rodriguez from 411Mania rated this game a 9 out of 10, and while none of the games are new, if you were a Sega Genesis owner(and even if you weren’t), this is a must-have collection with over 100 hours of game play. Check out Armando’s review here. [411Mania]

EA Sports president Peter Moore thinks Sony and Microsoft are not planning to simply replicate Nintendo Wii-style motion control, but instead go one step further.
“I think that, knowing Microsoft in particular obviously, that they are constantly thinking three to five years ahead of where consumer behaviour is going to be, how do people want to interact with their games, and are probably thinking about, not how do we replicate motion control, but how do we go one step further?” the former Xbox executive told GameTrailers.
“So, to your point, I think they’re doing that and I think Sony probably the same.”
Microsoft has been heavily linked to a potential acquisition of 3DV Systems, a motion-detection interface company, while current PS3 controllers already feature basic motion control capabilities.

You may recall the news that In2Games was making their own Wii-like motion controller for [true] next-gen consoles. Now In2Games has become ‘Performance Design Products’, and more details are starting to flow in about their GameTrek Freedom device including how it works, when it will be released, and on which system. Note the lack of an ’s’ there, that’s because they will launch the Gametrak Freedom™ exclusively for the Xbox 360 in fall 2009. That’s right, it seems PS3 support has gone out the window.
Gametrak Freedom connects to your Xbox 360 via a base unit hooked into the USB input port and is described as a “proprietary and patent-pending ultrasonic 3D motion sensing technology“. They take a jab at Nintendo when they go on to say that “Unlike other motion sensing gaming systems, Gametrak Freedom™ does not rely on the gamer pointing a controller at the screen nor does it restrict the gamer to limited movements. The system accurately tracks the true 3D position and precise movements of up to four players anywhere within a given environment.” And the slap at the Wii is warranted, we were the first to explain that the Wii motion controller did not work as Nintendo had first bragged, hence the need for their still upcoming MotionPlus add-on.
The bigger question still remains; is Microsoft working on their own 360 motion controller, or will they be endorsing this one as the solution? The only hint is the fact that Microsoft is allowing PDP to make a game controller for the 360 at all, since Microsoft® is legally blocking most companies from producing, manufacturing or distributing peripherals for the Xbox 360™. If they were making their own, they likely would have blocked the GameTrek.
PDP also announced a new stylus for the Nintendo DS with motion controls built in. Check out more details on both at TechRadar.

More HD goodness is the works. This time it’s King of Fighters XII for the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Set to be released in July 2009, this fighter will feature 20 playable characters and the game will undergo complete graphical overhaul using newly drawn sprites and detailed backgrounds. Unlike other HD 2D games that feature cell-shaded animations, KoF XII uses completely hand drawn images giving the game a nice reminiscent feeling of previous King of Fighter games. You can see a comparison of the old and new graphics here in the recently released trailer here.
