Nintendo Guru Matt Cassamassina on Natal’s Technology

5. June 2009

Way back in at the annual Game Developer’s Conference in February of last year, IGN’s Nintendo team leader Matt Casamassina got a chance to try out what may or may not be the technology powering Microsoft’s new Project Natal, the ZCam. He was extremely impressed with it, even going so far as to say that “it really out-Wiis Wii”,  “and this is coming from a guy who’s into Wii”. While there he also tested out their boxing demo which he said was ‘twenty times better than the Wii’.

And if that still wasn’t enough, he actually said that “Nintendo may just rip this off completely, because it would be amazing if they did”. Isn’t it a shame Nintendo didn’t listen to him and beat the competition to the punch.

E3 ‘09 Microsoft’s Project Natal vs. Sony’s Eyetoy Motion Controller

2. June 2009

fightIf anyone was still unconvinced that motion control was the future of gaming, there can be no question now after it was the star of the show at all three press conferences at E3 2009. And while Nintendo brought the idea to the forefront first in most gamers’ minds, the fact is that Sony did it first on a much smaller scale with the original EyeToy. And while Nintendo tried to market their Wiimote add-on Motion Plus at E3 as the next step forward in waggle gaming, Microsoft and Sony smashed their hopes with ambitious plans of their own.

So now the question that will be debated long into the foreseeable future is which of the two technologies reigns supreme. We’ll try to answer that question as best it can be with what little we’ve seen of both so far.

E3 ‘09 Sony Reveals EyeToy-based Motion Controller

2. June 2009

sonymotionWell it looks like we’re two-for-two this year, as Sony enveils it’’s own version of motion-controlled gaming to compete with Microsoft’s technology. Their version, which went unnamed, uses a handle with a glowing ball on the end of it which their  EyeToy-like camera can see in real time. Every motion of the controller is seen down to the millimeter and executed with speed and precision on the screen. On top of that, your screen can show different items in your hand to make it appear as though you are holding a sword, a gun, a whip, anything you can imagine! We immediately saw the comparisons with  D’FUSION’s Augmented Reality.

We’ll follow up shortly with a comparison of the two technologies from both Microsoft and Sony. Which is better, and why? We’ll explore those answers along with some visions of what this technology could mean to your gaming experience in the near future, stay tuned.

E3 ‘09 Xbox 360 Motion Controls Are In, Controllers Are Out!

natalAs previously reported, the Xbox 360 is getting motions controls that blow the Wii out of the water, no controller needed! It’s The best controller ever made…you!

While it looks something like a glorified sensor bar, it’s actually a camera that sees you as the controller, with depth perception brought on by a 3D depth map for full body motion capture, and some sophisticated software to put it all together. Add in some voice recognition for good measure, and you’ve got Minority Report in the making. It could be likened to an advanced 3D EyeToy. You can read more on the technical details over at IGN.

Peter Molyneux also showed off a demonstration called Milo of a little boy that completely interacted with the player, can you say Seaman?

While there’s no release date set (except to say that it definitely won’t be in 2009), development kits are headed to developers right away. Get excited!
