Console Gaming, Features

We were wrong. Despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, no new motion controllers were revealed for the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 at this year’s Electronics Entertainment Expo. But that doesn’t mean one still isn’t coming, or perhaps was actually supposed to be revealed at E3.

First let us catch you up on some important relevant facts so you can better appreciate the good part. Before E3 Bungie had been building up for for a big announcement coming July 15th, Monday at E3. Come Monday a countdown timer appeared on their website that would now end on Wednesday of E3 instead. What could have caused the delay? Interesting that the Wii Motion Plus was also revealed earlier that day, just sayin’.

But then the unthinkable happened, at the last second the announcement was blocked by the publisher, which is Microsoft. The drama! As it turns out, at least one of Bungie’s projects is a Halo game. That new, Bungie Halo game, to be obviously published by MS, was supposed to be unveiled during Microsoft’s keynote, but according to Don Mattrick, they pulled it at the last minute because Microsoft – perhaps catching wind of the sub-par standard of their competitor’s addresses “felt we could do this game more justice with a more dedicated event”.

Must be a huge game announcement to get a dedicated event. But why would Microsoft block a Bungie announcement which clearly Bungie was not happy about? Perhaps because it’s more than just a new Halo game at stake…it’s all about the motion controller.

EGM magazine said it over a year ago; Bungie is working on a new Halo game that will be bundled with a motion controller, see the EGM magazine clip for yourself here

Nintendo revealed their Wiimote 1:1 add-on before Microsoft’s press conference. Why? Because their intel told them that Microsoft was releasing one with true 1:1 control. Nintendo alludes to the fact that they knew others would follow what they’re doing several times during their press conference, saying that they can’t just sit still on their success.

Microsoft also suspected that Sony was revealing a motion controller, so they thought ‘let’s see what Sony reveals first, and we’ll reveal ours after them on Wednesday to steal back the thunder’.

Think about this last point; every single major Microsoft leak came true (Avatars, Lips, and even the 3D dashboard) except the biggest one of them all, the motion controller. And don’t forget that the source of the 3D dashboard rumor (now fact) also said it would use the motion controller, hard to believe he was right about only half of his insider info.

So when will this “dedicated event” take place? All we do know for sure now is that they “have no plans to make any big announcements or huge reveals at PAX this year”. So perhaps Leipzig, which starts August 20? We’ll stay on top of it.
